Today a few of us rode the horses to a nearby lake. It’s the first time Lexi and I went for a trail ride off the property. It was a four hour ride round trip. What a lovely way to spend the afternoon.

I was unsure how she’d react to all we might encounter on our journey so was on my toes as we experienced another first together. She was very alert and looking at everything as we started out. I could almost hear her thoughts, “Where are we going? What is that? Hey did you see that over there? Are you sure this is a good idea?” I held my breath when the first car came up the road behind us, but she handled it like a trooper. It didn’t faze her at all. Another moment of uncertainty was through a swampy area with a bunch of ducks. They would suddenly fly up out of the water beside us. Again, Lexi handled it like an old seasoned soul instead of a five year old out on her maiden journey.

We reached the lake after about a two hour ride. It was a warm day and the horses were happy to cool off. Lexi happily followed the other horses into the water to splash around.

It was nice we had the others to ride with. We had a lovely afternoon of conversation and laughs as we rode. It was wonderful to experience the horses splashing in the water and having fun.

We played around in the lake and cooled off before beginning our journey home. On the way home we picked up the pace a bit now that everyone had cooled off in the lake. We trotted and cantered as we made our way back. Enjoying the wide open space. I can’t imagine a better way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon.
